sharing our space

Lily is going to be a veterinarian when she grows up.  And she is going to live on a farm.

The plan, which our kids discuss nearly every day, is that she will live there with Quinn, who will be the tractor man and the fix-it man. And Lily will take care of all the animals on the farm. She will also have an office for small animals and when people come to bring their dogs and cats for their check-ups they will be able to spend the day at the farm and visit with all the farm animals.

As you can imagine, I think Lily’s farm sounds absolutely lovely and I want to do everything I can to support her dreams.

Except there is one problem.

For the past several weeks a model of the veterinarian farm has existed on our kitchen table (which, by the way, is located in the middle of our living room).

John and I try to go with the flow as best we can and it’s been kind of nice having cozy dinners huddled at one end of the table or eating picnic-style on the floor of the playroom, but lately the farm has been expanding daily, and having it reside on our table has created more than a few conflicts in our family.

The solution I came up with was setting up another table (a curb score from last summer) in our playroom that is just for the veterinarian farm. Lily was a little hesitant but when she came home from school and saw the new set up, she decided it just might work for her…

…which is good. Because having time and space to eat together really works for our family!

my husband grew up eating dinner in front of the TV on TV tables. I’m trying to persuade him the table is where it is at. As the kids get older, the meals are quicker. All this to say, that I could not agree with you more.

Oh I like this! I love her dreams to be a vet and little brother’s role as fix-it man.

Little play tables are so great. We found a wooden coffee table years ago on the the side of the road and converted into a lego table. We glued on the large grey base pieces so they can build right on it.

Like these snapshots, literally, into your home. I find people’s home life so fascinating and much more interesting than say the economy or politics.

Oh Erin I laughed! You have perfectly described our table habits. Can we squeeze dinner in around the family draw paper, the playmobile, and the fabric. Yeah, course we can! But the, we find that in fact, it gets a wee bit peevish. And we need to start again. I love the solution you’ve come up with – and gee your home looks lovely. I adore playmobile. :-) Thanks for giving me a much needed moment of joy and anticipation this morning.

I love her dreams! I wanted to be a Marine Biologist when I was her age. I love the farm too. It’s lovely. My niece wanted to be a vet, but now that she’s 16 she’s changed to art. Just as cool. :)

I totally get this! The tables full of playmobile worlds (or playmobile mixed with wooden block gnomes mixed with lego guys…if I were to look up and over to my dining table at the moment;) it looks like lilly has the perfect spot now…I love that sweet girl’s mind:)

you are such good parents to letting it be for a few days before moving it. i am not sure i would have practiced the patience and would have asked that it be put away instead of moved!

I love your family table – it looks so inviting and homey. I think my Bella will turn out like your Lily. Bella has a fledgling farm growing with her Little Peoples that she adjusts and adds to every day. :)

Yes, we have been trying to balance the creative spirit with the logistics of a small house.. As much fun as it would be for every artist to have their own studio, mommy eventually has to say its time to put it away…

Love it! It’s amazing to see the pics of how a 5-year old’s mind works…I can only imagine how thrilling it is for her to have this little world – and so cool for you to recognize how deeply, truly important it is from her side of things!!
