For nearly two years now I have been taking pictures of and admiring the mud pit at Lily’s beautiful nursery school – an absolute favorite place for all the children who visit the garden. And yet for some reason, it did not occur to me until a few weeks ago, just how easy it would be to create something similar in our backyard.
I began by selecting a shady spot alongside our deck where grass does not grow very well anyway.
I marked off the mud pit zone with some orange construction cones (that I had previously bought for my construction-loving guy), rolled in some tree stumps from our wood pile (hope you don’t mind, Papa!), found an old board to lay on top for a table, gathered all of the digging tools that were strewn about the yard, an old dish strainer from the basement, and some wooden bowls I bought a while back at the thrift store and in about 15 minutes we had ourselves a mud pit.
Happy kids digging in the dirt. Happy mama taking photographs, cleaning up the kitchen, dreaming up blog posts, and planning her next 15 minute project, while they play. Yeah. I’d say having a mud pit in our backyard is working for our family!
