december digital sabbatical

by eringoodman on December 1, 2010

in energy management, holidays + celebrations

Although I tend to be what’s known as a “late adapter” when it comes to new technology, once I settle in to something (blogging, facebook, my smart phone) I often surprise myself with just how quickly a technology that I was sure I didn’t need becomes such a very important part of my life.

I love blogging. (Though honestly I do still cringe a bit when people refer to me as a “blogger” prefering to think of myself instead as a writer, who just happens to have a blog.)

And much to my surprise, I really do love Facebook (and what I’ve been able to figure out of Twitter), which remind me of my college dorm days when at any time of the day or night I could pop my head into one of a dozen rooms, get an answer to whatever random question was burning in my mind, spend a couple of minutes chatting, and then get back to studying or folding laundry or whatever.

As an extreme extrovert who spends most of my days working from home or caring for my children at home, digital communication has been a true lifesaver for me.

It has also at times been an addiction, or at least a mindless default that I’m not sure serves my best interest or that of my family.

And so as I flip my calendar to December and feel the beginnings of the holiday squeeze, I am giving myself the gift of stepping back from the digital world.

I won’t be completely unplugged. I will likely write a post or two on the Pat’s Pastured blog and will be updating the farm’s Facebook and Twitter feeds.

I will also be savoring every second I spend beautifully, blissfully, digitally connected with Hannah and our Holiday Connecting Group.

Beyond that I will be allowing this holiday season to unfold quietly, in its own time and in its own way, without feeling any need to make sense of it all or report on how it is going.

Enjoy the rest of 2010. I’ll see you next year!

love + light…

PS ~ Just for the record, the photo for this post is here because a couple of weeks ago when I got my heart set on a peaceful orchid for my last post of the year, I consulted my Facebook friends, who — in a matter of minutes — told me several places where I could find one locally.

Digital communication is good. And powerful. And really fun.

I just want to be sure I keep a healthy balance with it..

You are such a smart and eloquent mama! I identify so much with much of what you said, esp about being an extrovert who loves popping my head in when I need to say hi and check in :)
Enjoy your time! And Happy Holidays!

I’ve been through periods of too much Internet, too, mostly when my boys were much smaller and I felt very, very isolated. Everything in balance, and a digital break now and again is good for me, too. I never got onto Facebook, I de-Twittered quite a while ago, and I cut way back on the blogs I read. The problem I have with the Internet is how it encourages people to share their every last little whiny thought (hello, Twitter!!), and I can get that from my 6yo. If I’m going to be online, it’s to fill myself with ideas and inspiration.

I hope you enjoy your break! Your blog is full of ideas and inspiration. ;)

That is why you inspire me! Such power in that Erin.

I imagine you can already visualize this as a done deal, and can see the end result as exactly what you hoped.

Sounds perfect Erin. I know it will be amazingly soothing. I took my digital sabbatical in September and looking back it was the perfect time for me to make more space for my head.

whenever I’ve taken time away from the computer it has been a really good thing. I wish the same for your break…enjoy, and have blessed holiday season!

I have been feeling a bit of a need to do this as well. It seems the time to step back a bit, to live our lives more presently and less digitally. But it is addictive, and I almost feel compelled to spend time on line. I find that it can actually be difficult to tear myself away from the computer and actually read a book. How sad is that? Wishing you a wonderful, calm, relaxing and beautiful Holiday season. Lots of love to you and your family.

I have been trying to look for your books as you refer to yourself as a writer and I would love to buy them- where can I find them?

I just returned from a 4 or 5 month break from blogging, it was everything I thought it could be! I spent my time gardening, walking the kids to the farmers market (ages 2 and 3 in the double stroller), building a chicken coop, and writing the old fashioned way.
For reasons unknown I got a sudden urge to come back online again, on a whim I re-upped my blog:)
Now that I am back online I will be sure to check back here for your wonderful posts at the beginning of the year!
Enjoy the holidays!

Just coming to catch up and see I am a little late to catch this, but completely understand and wish the warmest of holiday times and the happiest of new years. Your writing (and audio and video) have touched me in some powerful ways at tender times this year. I thank you!
