Lily often grabs my camera and takes a photo or two during the afternoon, and I love to snap a few photos when mothers and daughters are engaged in connecting activities. But there are also many special and intimate moments that happen during the afternoon when the camera is tucked away and we are all fully engaged.
At the end of our time together, we have a closing circle and pass a talking rock so that each person may share a few words (if they choose) about what they liked best about the afternoon, what they’d like to take away with them, or just how they are feeling in that moment.
It is in this closing circle that participants (including Lily and me) often begin to really feel the effects of the the previous 2 1/2 hours and it is often a place where hearts open and a few tears may fall.
The girls express in their own beautiful, youthful way how wonderful it feels to “just be” with their moms (or sometimes aunties or grandmothers), to not be racing anywhere. To just be together.
And the mothers echo their daughters in their own beautiful, motherly way about how wonderful it feels to “just be” with their daughters. (With cell phones and to-do lists out of sight and out of mind.) To laugh. To play. To snuggle. To draw. To just be together.
Retreating, relaxing, reconnecting and renewing our spirits.
Each time I am part of this experience I am reminded just how important this soft, unstructured, open-ended time is for the health and well being of our relationships. Whether it is found in a yoga studio, on a nature walk, or in spiritual community (or somewhere that is completely unique to your family).
If you are inspired to share, I’d love to hear where you and your family make space to unplug from the busyness of daily life and enjoy “just being” together.
